Discover the Highest Waterfall in Vitosha Mountain
Boyana Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Vitosha Mountain, standing at 25 meters tall. It is formed by the Boyanska River, which descends steeply along the northern slopes of the mountain, cutting through volcanic andesite rock. This durable rock formation creates a series of smaller cascades and rapids along the riverbed, adding to the beauty of the hike. The base of the waterfall is situated at an altitude of 1,260 meters.
You can reach Boyana Waterfall from the Boyana district at the foot of the mountain, either by car or by public transport—bus lines 64 and 107 (stops: Boyansko Khanche or Boyana Church).
Two main hiking trails start at the entrance to Vitosha Nature Park, just above the historic Boyana Church:
The green trail passes by Boyana Lake. It is longer but easier to walk, as the incline is gentler. The hike takes approximately 1.5 hours.
The red trail is shorter but steeper and more challenging, with narrow and slippery sections, especially in wet conditions. It follows the riverbed, offering stunning views of small waterfalls and rocky formations. It takes a little over an hour.
There are also two alternative trails from higher up the mountain:
The first begins at Kopitoto and takes about 1 hour.
The second starts from Zlatnite Mostove, passing by Momina Sŭlza Hut, and takes about 1.5 hours in total (under 1 hour from the hut).
Both trails converge in the forest above the waterfall and lead to its upper edge. A narrow, steep path then descends to the base of the waterfall.
On clear spring days, when snowmelt from the higher parts of Vitosha increases the water volume, Boyana Waterfall can even be seen from central Sofia—appearing as a silver-white ribbon cascading down the mountain slope.
In the coldest winter months, the waterfall often freezes, forming two icy tongues. These attract ice climbing enthusiasts: the left side is easier and more gradual, while the right offers moderate difficulty.
Boyana Waterfall is even mentioned in the historical novel "The Boyana Master" by Fani Popova-Mutafova, where it is described as a favorite retreat of Kaloyan, the Sebastokrator of Sredets during the 13th century under the Second Bulgarian Empire.
A street in Sofia has been named in honor of the waterfall—Boyanski Vodopad Street—which runs through the neighborhoods of Strelbishte, Gotse Delchev, and Manastirski Livadi.
A walk to Boyana Waterfall is the perfect way to experience the natural beauty surrounding Sofia and to take a peaceful break from the city's rhythm—even if only for a few hours.
