As the holiday season approaches, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDŽ) once again invites us on an unforgettable journey with the Christmas Train. This unique initiative, enriched with the spirit of Christmas, offers a magical experience for young and old alike. Led by the iconic steam locomotive "Baba Meца" and featuring a retro carriage from the "Vitosha Express" transformed into Santa Claus and Snow White's realm, the journey promises to create memories that will warm hearts long after the holidays.

Whether you choose the route Sofia–Pernik–Sofia or Sofia–Bankya–Sofia, the Christmas Train will transport you to a world of retro romance, Christmas magic, and festive ambiance. Join us to rediscover the joy of travel, meet beloved characters, and embrace the warmth of the holiday spirit!

Special Holiday Rides with BDŽ

As part of the tradition, BDŽ (Bulgarian State Railways - www.bdz.bg) is organizing special Christmas Train journeys with a steam locomotive this holiday season.

The journeys will take place on December 14 (Saturday) along the Sofia–Pernik–Sofia route and on December 15 (Sunday) along the Sofia–Bankya–Sofia route.

The festive train will consist of five passenger carriages adorned with Christmas decorations and one retro carriage from the government train “Vitosha Express,” where Santa Claus and Snow White will greet the youngest passengers with gifts. At the helm will be the iconic steam locomotive 46.03 "Baba Meца," making a triumphant return to operation. This locomotive also stars in the latest Bulgarian movie "Gundi – A Legend of Love."

Schedule and Routes

December 14 (Saturday): Sofia–Pernik–Sofia

Departure from Sofia Central Station is at 10:00 AM, with stops at Razmenna, Voluyak, and Hrabrisko. The return trip from Pernik departs at 3:20 PM, passing through Vladaya and Gorna Banya, and arriving in Sofia at 4:47 PM.

December 15 (Sunday): Sofia–Bankya–Sofia

Departure from Sofia Central Station is at 9:50 AM, arriving in Bankya at 10:55 AM. The return trip leaves Bankya at 1:25 PM, arriving in Sofia at 2:00 PM.

During the stops in Pernik and Bankya, visitors can explore the retro carriage, take photos with Santa Claus and Snow White, enjoy festive programs and atmosphere, and visit Christmas markets.

Ticket Prices and Reservations

Round-trip tickets for the Sofia–Pernik–Sofia and Sofia–Bankya–Sofia routes are priced at:

Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices and railway bureaus at any station in the country or online at the BDŽ website: www.bileti.bdz.bg.

In November, 15 lucky winners received vouchers for a journey on the Christmas Train through a BDŽ lottery for registered valid tickets.
