The Sofia Opera and Ballet presents another open-air cultural event this July and August – Opera on the Square, taking place in front of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (just a 15–20-minute walk from our apartments).
This initiative is organized with the support of the Sofia Municipality and under the patronage of the Mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev.

On July 11, 12, and 13, the musical poem The Hermit of Rila was performed.
The production commemorates the 1160th anniversary of the Christianization of the Bulgarian people.
The poem, written by Bulgarian Revival author Tihomir Pavlov (his final work, completed in 1937), tells the story of St. John of Rila the Miracle Worker, one of Bulgaria’s most revered saints.
The music was composed in 2022 by Father Kiril Popov – priest, composer, conductor, and educator.

The festival continues with the world-renowned musical Les Misérables, the most performed musical of all time.
It has been on the global stage for over 30 years, with more than 120 million viewers in 52 countries.

You can enjoy the moving story of Jean Valjean, Gavroche, Cosette, the Thénardiers, and other unforgettable characters from Victor Hugo’s masterpiece on July 30 and 31, and August 1 and 2, starting at 8:00 PM.
Music by: Claude-Michel Schönberg
Libretto and adaptation: Alain Boublil
Director: Plamen Kartaloff
Starring: Vladimir Mihaylov, Vesela Delcheva, Orlin Pavlov, Plamen Dimov-Grandjan, Veniamin Dimitrov, Georgi Arsov, Georgi Dzhanov, Vesela Yaneva, and others.

The Opera on the Square festival will conclude on August 8 at 9:00 PM with a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Maestro Daniel Oren.
Soloists include Jessica Pratt, Gregory Kunde, Violeta Radomirska, and Alexander Vinogradov.
This concert celebrates the 240th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller’s "Ode to Joy".

All performances feature the orchestra and choir of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, conducted by Violeta Dimitrova.

Tickets for the festival can be purchased online via the Sofia Opera and Ballet’s website.
