The Rosarium is one of the most beautiful spots in Borisova Garden – the oldest and largest park in Sofia.
It’s especially popular among both locals and visitors to the capital during May and June, when the roses are in full bloom and fill the air with their enchanting fragrance.
It is located right next to the Vasil Levski National Stadium and Ariana Lake (accessible via the “Orlov Most” and “Vasil Levski Stadium” metro stations, just a 20–25 minute walk from our apartments).
The Rosarium is open 24 hours a day, every day.
The Rosarium was created in the early 20th century (between 1906 and 1910) at the initiative of gardener Josef Frei, who was in charge of the park until 1934.
Unlike his predecessor Daniel Neff, who was fond of acacias, Josef Frei had a passion for flowers and especially roses. He designed entire rose-lined walkways and began organizing flower exhibitions. It was also under his guidance that red fish were released into the lily pond, and the chestnut and linden tree alleys beneath it were developed. Ariana Lake was also created during this time.
The first major renovation of the Rosarium took place in 1934, when 1,400 roses were planted, specially imported from Germany.
Between August 2018 and May 2019, the Rosarium was fully restored thanks to an initiative by Sofia Municipality, based on a 1984 landscape design project.
On an area of 3 decares (approx. 0.75 acres), around 7,000 plants were planted, including 2,000 roses from 50 different varieties – hybrid tea roses, polyantha, standard, miniature, climbing, and rambling roses.
The walkways, park lighting, green spaces, and benches bordered by green hedges were all renewed. Arched trellises were also installed, beautifully wrapped in climbing roses.
At the center of the Rosarium stands a decorative fountain equipped with a pump system, which is a replica of the original fountain from the “Bukata” Garden, relocated from Slaveykov Square in the 1930s.
Inspired by the parks of Vienna, informational signs have been placed next to each rose variety.
In the evening, the gentle glow of the lanterns creates a pleasant and romantic atmosphere.
